Frequently asked questions.
Do I need a referal?
You do not need a referral to be seen, but it is highly recommended you be under the care of a primary care physician or orthopedic provider in the event you require medical work-up outside the scope of our practice.
Do you take insurance?
Heal At Home Hawaii does not participate with any insurance plans because many of our treatments are not a covered benefit. This provides a much greater degree of price transparency for our patients and helps them to avoid any surprise bills.
If our team determines that you have a condition outside the scope of what can be reasonably offered, you will be directed back to your regular physician.
What is prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is an injection-based treatment that involves injecting an irritant solution, most commonly hypertonic dextrose (sugar water), into ligaments, tendons, or joints to cause natural inflammation which stimulates tissue repair and reduces pain in chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is drawing your own blood to create a serum with a platelet concentration above baseline, typically prepared by centrifugation (spinning). It contains a high density of platelets, growth factors, cytokines, and other bioactive molecules that modulate inflammation and promote tissue repair and regeneration when injected into the area of concern.
Who is a good candidate for prolotherapy or PRP?
Prolotherapy is a reasonable option in the management of many chronic musculoskeletal complaints such as arthritis, tendinopathy, or chronic low back pain. It can be particularly effective when paired with other rehabilitative therapies such as physical therapy or osteopathic manipulation.
Prolotherapy is usually most effective after a series of 3-6 injections spaced out between 2-4 weeks apart.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is similar to prolotherapy in that it aims to stimulate the body’s own healing cascade to improve musculoskeletal pain, but it has the added potency of your body’s own concentrated repair factors to fuel the process.
PRP does not have a specific number of injections recommended and in some cases, may be effective after a single treatment.
Who is not a good candidate for prolotherapy or PRP?
Prolotherapy and PRP injections are generally not effective for patients with inflammatory or auto-immune arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, for individuals with diffuse pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia or complex regional pain syndrome, or those that are on daily opioid therapy. Lastly, patients will need to stop any oral anti-inflammatory medication for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after a prolotherapy or PRP treatment for the full benefit to be appreciated.
Do you provide oral medication prescriptions?
Heal At Home Hawaii does not offer any prescription/controlled substance medications.
